What is the history behind Kosovo and Serbia?

I want to know and better understand why Kosovo wants independence and why Serbia attacked the U.S. Embassy. I don’t know enough about the history and would like someone to give me some details and a general timeline on why this is happening. I am aware of the war back in the 1990’s and that there was mass genocide over there. I am aware of a Christian and Muslim rift, but not understanding the history and how it all ties together.

Is there a similar event in history to the current situation in Iraq?

I’m too young for any similar events in my own life and currently can’t think of one from history where (victorious) forces have to police their defeated enemy to prevent collapse and fallout consequences. Please, without (too many partisan) oppinions, have there been similar situations? What was the outcome? Thanks.
